Ecology: Dry woods and clearings.  Soil moisture average to dry.
Blooming Period: July into August
Typical Height Range: 2 to 3 feet   (6 to 9 dm).

 What to look for in the field: 

  A relatively slender, few-headed plant.  In more robust plants, the capitulescence is in the shape of a simple corymb.
  Stems are thin, glabrous and often bent at the nodes.
  Basal leaves are not present at flowering.  Mid- to upper stem leaves are ovate and taper to short, broadly-winged petioles (giving appearance of being elliptical in shape). The largest leaves are at mid-stem.  Leaves above and below mid-stem become progressively smaller.  Leaves are not clasping.
 Heads are medium-sized, about 2.5 cm wide.  Rays are white.  Disc florets are yellow.  Phyllaries are lanceolate and not spreadingView image of involucre and phyllaries.
