Ecology: Thickets, roadside ditches, unmowed damp fields; open woods.  Rich, often damp soil.  Full sun to part shade.
Blooming Period: August - September
Typical Height Range: 3 to 6 ft.   (9 to 18 dm)

 What to look for in the field: 
  Capitulescence is in the shape of a corymb, either flat-topped or round-topped, often broad.  Heads may be few or many, located at the ends of the branches in corymb-like arrays.
  Stems are often stout, usually straight.
  Basal leaves are absent at flowering.  Stem leaves are broadly lanceolate to elliptic, not greatly reduced in size upwards on the stem.
  Heads are small to medium-sized, from 1.9 to 2.3 cm wide.  Rays are white.  Disc florets are yellow, turning pale tan to gray.  Involucres are somewhat broad and cylindrical in shape.  Phyllaries are not spreadingView image of involucre and phyllaries.
