Ecology: Woods, open woods or clearings.
Blooming Period: Mid-August into early October.
Typical Height Range: 2 to 3 feet   (6 to 9 dm)

 What to look for in the field: 
  Capitulescence is in the shape of a corymb.  Heads may be few or many, located at the ends of branches.
  Stems are often bent at the nodes, glabrous below, becoming finely short-pubescent above in the capitulescence.  Stems are not glandular.
  Basal leaves are deciduous by flowering.  Lower to mid-stem leaves are heart-shaped, on long petioles and sharply toothed.  Upper stem leaves are ovate or lanceolate and toothed.
  Heads are medium-sized, from 1.8 to 2.9 cm wide.  Involucres are cylindrical in shape.  Phyllaries are ovate or lanceolate, neither spreading nor glandular.   Rays are white.  Disc florets are yellow, turning purple.  View image of involucre and phyllaries.
