Ecology: Woods and clearings.  Sweeter (high pH) soils.
Blooming Period: Mid-July into September
Typical Height Range: 2 to 4 feet   (6 to 12 dm)

 What to look for in the field: 
  Capitulescence is in the shape of a corymb.  Heads may be numerous on robust plants, but not crowded.
  Stems are stout, straight or bent at the nodes, glabrous below, becoming pubescent (but not glandular) above.
  Basal leaves are usually present during flowering, often forming large colonies.  Basal and lower stem leaves are large, broadly heart-shaped, toothed and with long petiolesMid- to upper stem leaves become progressively smaller upwards, and are more ovate in shape with shorter, broad-winged petioles.
  Heads are small-to-medium size, from 1.9 to 2.4 cm wide.  Rays are WHITE.  Disc florets are bright yellow, turning reddish.  Phyllaries are lanceolate, pubescent, but only sparsely glandular, if at allView image of involucre and phyllaries.

** NatureServe is showing this species as present and unranked in Rhode Island.  However, it is not listed in Vascular Flora of Rhode Island (1998).  It is also not mentioned in the state's list of rare/endangered species.
