Ecology: Open woods and clearings, often sandy; more/less coastal plain.
Blooming Period: Mid-August through September.
Typical Height Range: 1 to 2.5 feet  (2 to 7 dm)

 What to look for in the field: 
  Capitulescence is in the shape of a corymb.  Branches and heads are relatively few in number.
  Stems are more/less straight, glabrous below,  becoming densely glandular and sparsely pubescent above, near branches.
  Basal leaves are ovate, on long, thin petioles, often present as sterile rosettes.  Lower stem leaves are ovate, tapering to long, thin petioles.  Mid- to upper stem leaves become progressively smaller and more elliptic/lanceolate, tapering to shorter, broader petioles or becoming sessile.
  Involucres are vase shaped.  Phyllaries are recurved and densely glandular.  Rays are pale blue-violet.  Disc florets are yellow.  View image of involucre and phyllaries.
