Ecology: Old fields, roadsides and disturbed sites.  Dry, sandy or infertile soil.
Blooming Period: September - October
Typical Height Range: 2 to 4 ft.   (6 to 12 dm)

 What to look for in the field: 
  Capitulescence is in the shape of a well-defined panicle, the longest branches lowest.
  Stems and branches are evenly, but densely short pubescent.
  Basal leaves are absent.  All but highest stem leaves are usually deciduous by flowering.  Leaves are narrowly lanceolate to linear, sessile, much smaller in size on branches, spine-tipped. 
  Heads are very small, 0.9 to 1.5 cm wide.  Rays are white.  Disc florets are yellow, turning reddish.  Phyllaries are strongly recurved, with a distinct green patch, and spine tipView image of involucre and phyllaries.
