Ecology: Rocky river shores or ledges along rivers; seasonally inundated.
Blooming Period: Mid-July into early September
Typical Height Range: 6 to 18 inches   (1.5 to 4.5 dm)

 What to look for in the field: 
  Capitulescence is in the shape of a panicleHeads are few per stem, mostly at ends of short, ascending branches.
  Stems are thin, straight and glabrous, becoming pubescent in lines above.
  Basal and lowest stem leaves are oblanceolate, tapering to long, winged petioles, often present at flowering.  Mid- to upper stem leaves are oblanceolate, becoming more  sessile upwards.
  Involucres are narrowly vase-shaped.  Phyllaries are not spreading, and have a distinct green patch, which may be tinged with purple.  Rays are white.  Disc florets are pale yellow or white, turning magenta.    View image of involucre and phyllaries.
