What to look for in the field:
The capitulescence consists of many crowded (closely-spaced), ascending or spreading and often recurved branches.  It is located at the top of the stem and is sometimes conical in shape.  Branches are densely pubescent and leafy.  Heads are numerous and crowded on branches, forming one-sided arrays.
Stems are stout and densely pubescent.  Insect galls are sometimes present in stems.
Basal leaves are absent.  Lower stem leaves are usually deciduous by flowering.  Mid- to upper stem leaves are oblanceolate or lanceolate, lacking petioles, have three main parallel veins, are pubescent throughout on the undersides and somewhat rough to the touch on the upper surface.  Leaves are either untoothed or finely toothed toward the tips.
Leaf and stem coloration of this species often appears as gray-green or dull green due to dense pubescence.
  Colony-forming from rhizomes.
