What to look for in the field:
The capitulescence is rather open, with relatively few branches, located toward the upper 1/3 to 1/4 of the stem.  Branches are pubescent, ascending and recurved when longer.  Heads are numerous and crowded on branches, forming one-sided arrays.
Stems are straight, glabrous below, becoming pubescent upwards near branches.
Leaves are basally-disposed.  Basal leaves are often present during flowering.  Basal and lower stem leaves are ovate, with long pointed tips and taper to winged petioles.  Leaves are sharply and prominently toothed.  Mid- to upper stem leaves gradually become smaller in size, more narrowly ovate or lanceolate and less prominently toothed or even untoothed (upper-most).
