What to look for in the field:
The capitulescence consists of numerous spreading and often recurved branches located near the top of the stem.  (Branches tend to be shorter than those of S. rugosa ssp. rugosa.)  Branches are densely short-pubescent.  Branch leaves, though numerous, tend to be smaller and finer than those of S. rugosa ssp. rugosa.  Heads are crowded on branches in one-sided arrays.
Stems are straight, sometimes recurved at the tip, and densely short-pubescent.
Basal and lowest stem leaves are deciduous by flowering.  Mid-stem leaves are ovate, finely or shallowly-toothed, short-pointed at the tips, somewhat thick, rough to the touch and have prominent veins.  Upper stem leaves are similar, but progressively reduced in size.
   Colony-forming from rhizomes.
