Solidago latifolia

Broad-leaved Goldenrod

State Status * CT MA RI VT NH ME
P P S2 P P P

Ecology: Woods, more frequently on sweeter soil, though not necessarily on calcareous soil.
Blooming Period: August to September
Typical Height Range: 2' to 3'   (6 to 9 dm)

What to look for in the field:
The capitulescence is typically narrow, with short branchlets growing either at the top of the stem or from nodes along the stem.  Heads are NOT arranged in one-sided arrays on branchlets.  Plants with longer branches don't seem to occur frequently.
Stems are bent at the nodes, often conspicuously.  They are glabrous below, becoming pubescent in the capitulescence.
Basal leaves are deciduous by flowering.  Lower and mid-stem leaves are broadly ovate, sharply toothed, taper to slender points and have winged petioles.  Upper stem leaves are gradually reduced in size and become more narrowly ovate, but are otherwise similar.
Under favorable conditions, this species will form colonies from rhizomes.
Involucres are from 4.5 to 7 mm high.**
[ Note:  This is the only goldenrod species in New England which has stems that are bent at the nodes. ]
