Ecology: Fresh or salt-water swamps or damp thickets near coast.
Blooming Period: August to September
Typical Height Range: 3 to 7 feet   (9 to 21 dm)

 

 What to look for in the field: 
  The capitulesence consists of numerous ascending or spreading and recurved branches.  It is often conical in shape.  Branches are sparsely short pubescentHeads are crowded in one-sided arrays on branches.
  Stems are stout, glabrous below the capitulescence, sparsely short pubescent within the capitulescence.

  Basal and lower-most stem leaves are usually deciduous by flowering.  Mid- to upper stem leaves are numerous and somewhat crowded, dark green in color, ovate to elliptic in shape, untoothed or with shallow teeth.  Petioles are very short or lacking.  Leaves feel and appear glabrous, but are finely pubescent under magnification.
