Blooming Period: Late July into early September

What to look for in the field:
The capitulescence is typically long and narrow, with numerous short branchlets growing either near the top of the stem or from nodes along the stem.  Heads are relatively large and showy, NOT arranged in one-sided arrays on branchlets.  Longer-branched plants are infrequent.
Stems are stout and straight, glabrous below, gradually becoming pubescent upwards.
Leaves are basally-disposedBasal and lower stem leaves are often present during flowering.  They are ovate, and taper abruptly to long, winged petioles.  They are nearly heart-shaped, but lack the characteristic and distinctive "notch" at the base of the blade.  They are sharply toothed and have long, slender tips.  Mid- to upper stem leaves become *gradually* smaller and narrower upward.  They are also ovate, sharply toothed or with fine, shallow teeth, and taper to shorter winged petioles.
Involucres are tall, from 9.5 to 11.5 mm high.**
