Ecology: Old fields, open woods, open disturbed sites; dry, sandy or rocky terrain
Blooming Period: Late August through September
Typical Height Range: 1.5' to 3'   (5 to 9 dm)
[Our plants are ssp. nemoralis.]

What to look for in the field:
The capitulescence consists of numerous spreading and recurved, densely short-pubescent branches or branchlets which are located in the upper quarter to one third of the stem.  Heads are crowded in one-sided arrays on branches.
Stems are thin and straight (not bent at the nodes), densely short-pubescent throughout.  The upper-most portion of the stem is often arching or recurved.
Leaves are basally-disposed.  Basal and lower stem leaves may be present at flowering for robust plants.  They are oblanceolate or spoon-shaped, shallowly-toothed, and taper to long winged petioles.  Tips are blunt to rounded.  Mid- to upper stem leaves become rapidly and progressively smaller upwards, petioles eventually becoming shorter or lacking (upper-most).  Stem leaves are oblanceolate with somewhat short-pointed tips.  Tufts of small leaflets are often present in nodes along the stem.
Leaf and stem coloration of this species often appears as gray-green or dull green due to dense pubescence, and thus the common name "gray goldenrod".
