Typical Height Range: 3' to 5'   (9 to 15 dm)

 What to look for in the field: 
  The capitulescence consists of numerous ascending or widely-spreading branches, which are sometimes quite long and recurved.  Branches are densely pubescent and leafy.  Branch leaves are conspicuous.  Heads are numerous and crowded in one-sided arrays on branches.
  Stems are stout and densely pubescent, often rough to the touch.

  Basal and lowest stem leaves are deciduous by flowering.  Mid- to upper stem leaves are elliptic to ovate, sharply toothed, and tapering to long, pointed tips.  Lower and mid-stem leaves have very short (almost inconspicuous) petiolesLeaves sometimes have a wavy or wrinkled quality.  They have one prominent vein, and a network of smaller veins (i.e., not triple-veined).  Stem leaves diminish is size only gradually upwards.

  Colony-forming from rhizomes.
