Ecology: Beaches and coastal areas; escaped or introduced to some interior roadsides

Typical Height Range: 2' to 4'   (6 to 12 dm)
Two subspecies occur in our region:  ssp. sempervirens and ssp. mexicana.

 

 What to look for in the field: 
  The capitulescence can be variously narrow or broad, with ascending, recurved branches.  Branches are leafy, glabrous or occasionally sparsely pubescentHeads are large and showy, in one-sided arrays on branches.
  Stems are stout and glabrous, somewhat fleshy.
  Leaves are basally-disposed.  Basal and lowest stem leaves are lanceolate or ovate, tapering to long, winged petioles.  They are often present at flowering.  Mid- to upper stem leaves are numerous and crowded, lanceolate, glabrous, untoothed, thick and fleshy, gradually becoming smaller upward.
