Ecology: Dry rock outcrops at higher elevations in mountains (var monticola).  Calcareous outcrops along rivers (var racemosa).
Blooming Period: August-September
Typical Height Range: 1' to 2'  (3 to 6 dm)
[Our species are var monticola and var racemosa.  Shown above, var monticola.  The two varieties are distinguished by leaf characteristics and by preferred habitats.]

What to look for in the field:
The capitulescence is typically long and narrow, with numerous short branchlets growing at the top of the stem or from nodes along the stem.  Heads are very crowded on branches, NOT in one-sided arrays.  Robust plants may have a broader capitulescence, with numerous longer, straight, ascending branches.
Stems are glabrous to very sparsely short-pubescent below, becoming short pubescent within the capitulescence, growing straight upwards ("erect") or outwards ("ascending") from the base of the plant.
Leaves are basally-disposedBasal leaves are often present during flowering.  They are glabrous, resinous, shallowly toothed, obovate or broadly oblanceolate, tapering to long, winged petioles, either with pointed or blunt tips.  Stem leaves are glabrous and resinous, progressively reduced in size upwards, and becoming more lanceolate, with shorter petioles or lacking petioles.
  Involucres are resinous.
