01/14/2010 Three aster quizes have been added to the Quizes Page.  Each quiz is intended to help you identify one species.  The species is described in detail, and a photo of the capitulescence is displayed.  If you need help with the identification, you are encouraged to use one of the online keys (recommended), or just start browsing the species main pages (boring and tedious).

Otherwise of note, I discovered that the specific epithet for our Ionactis species is now considered "linariifolia" rather than "linariifolius"Flora of North America and the International Plant Names Index both recognize the newer name.  Most links on this website have been updated to reflect the new name.

01/12/2010 A new key to the asters of New England has just been uploaded to this website.  Refer to the keys page for the link.  There is also a new, corresponding "Online" version of the new key, which is different from the printable version mainly in that technical terms are hyperlinked to definitions in the glossary, for reader convenience.

The new key includes four additional species:  Eurybia x herveyi, Symphyotrichum praealtum, Symphyotrichum subulatum and Symphyotrichum urophyllum.  All of these are either rare or very uncommon in New England.  Also, as with the new goldenrod key, some technical (Latin) terms have been replaced with English terms and some of the descriptions have been refined to be more precise.

You should discard any older versions of my key that you may have been using.  Please write to me with corrections or suggestions for improvement.

The new key includes one additional species (Solidago hispida).  The overall logic of the key is unchanged.  However, some technical (Latin) terms have been replaced with English terms and some of the descriptions have been refined to be more precise.  A couple corrections have also been made.

And last, but not least, there are now 2 quizes, both for goldenrods.  See the Quizes Page.  Each quiz is intended to help you identify one species.  The species is described in detail, and a photo of the capitulescence is displayed.  If you need help with the identification, you are encouraged to use one of the keys to the goldenrods (recommended), or just start browsing the species main pages (boring and tedious).
