This monarch was one of the last butterflies I saw at the nature center that season - a straggler among migrants.   Unlike other butterflies that are present in late season, however, the monarchs may be able to migrate southward if they could pick up a warm thermal higher up.  But, the odds are against a butterfly making it out of northern Vermont much past the first week of October, for temperatures there are consistently cold and most nectar sources have disappeared.
