Shelburne Pond, in Shelburne, Vermont, is one of those amazing natural areas.  It's now protected by The Nature Conservancy and managed by the University of Vermont.  In mid-May, the forest floor is carpeted with these showy trilliums.  It only proves that if you leave a good natural area alone, wondrous things will happen "naturally" over time.  A trillium requires from 5 to 10 years to mature to produce its first flower.
