Lauren Brown's Weeds in Winter was the inspiration for this photograph of a common burdock, and many other pictures I did that winter and the following winter.  I learned that there is a surprising number of species that maintain a winter presence in the form of a dried stalk or seedhead.  I spent many an hour roaming about fields and vacant lots in my former hometown of Montpelier, Vermont, photographing wildflowers.   Boy, was it ever cold!
